A Virtual Learning Environment[1] (VLE) is a web-based platform for the digital aspects of courses of study, usually within educational institutions. These platforms provide content management for creating, storing, accessing, and utilizing learning materials. They aid in curriculum mapping and planning, enhancing learner engagement and administration. VLEs also facilitate communication and collaboration through various digital tools such as emails, chat platforms, and video conferencing. Furthermore, they offer student accessibility features like 24/7 access to learning materials and personalized learning experiences. They support multiple courses and provide consistent interfaces for institutions, fostering global information exchange. While they have raised concerns about interpersonal disconnect, they are recognized for their role in skill development. Lastly, VLEs are subject to assessments for effectiveness and are witnessing emerging trends including AI and gamification.
