The term “Mention” in the context of blogging and médias sociaux[1] platforms refers to the practice of directing a post or comment to a specific user or group of users. This is typically accomplished by using the “@” symbol followed by the user’s handle or name. The concept of mentioning originated on Twitter[3], where it was first used to engage with other users in a public conversation. Over time, other platforms including Facebook[2], YouTube[4], and WikiPedia, adopted the feature, expanding its use to include tagging friends, groups, and pages. The “+” sign was also introduced on Google[5]+ for the same purpose. Mentioning is an integral part of social interaction on digital platforms, and it’s supported by various software like TinyMCE, CKEditor, GitLab, and Mastodon. The creation and evolution of this feature have significantly shaped the way users communicate and interact online.
